Volume: Dia de los Toadies Night One – Acoustic Night – 08/26/11

“I think we’re going to rename this night” Toadies frontman Vaden Todd Lewis proclaimed as he pulled out his very electrified Gibson SG. “Maybe Chill Night or something” as the band launched into their second song, a reworked “Dead Boy Boogie” from last year’s Feeler re-recording. Indeed, where last year’s inaugural “Acoustic” night was strictly acoustic performances, in 2011 the concept was taking new form.

That form being more rearranged and reworked versions of popular and fan favorite tracks, keeping the night a very special event indeed. Opening with The Faces “Ooh La La”, The Toadies offered plenty of surprises (unreleased fan favorite “Send You To Heaven”, Talking Heads “Psycho Killer”) and familiar favorites (their gorgeous reimagining of “Tyler”, mid-period gem “Paper Dress”, “Doll Skin”). The reemergence of a mid-90’s variation of “I Come From The Water” called “Acid Water” was a pleasant surprise as well, although it wasn’t as Morphine-tinged as it originally was.

Closing with an instrumental surf version of “Velvet”, The Toadies had handsomely displayed their musical prowess and creativity. It will be interesting to see where this night goes each year going forward.

The lone opener, Austin’s Quiet Company, held their own in the face of extreme heat and rocking their trademark suits. Peppering their well received set with covers (Pixies “Here Comes Your Man”, Phil Collins “Easy Lover” and The Smiths “Ask” ) while ending with the crowd pleasing “How Do You Do It” from last year’s tremendous EP “Songs For Staying In”. Be on the lookout for Quiet Company in the next few months, their new album We Are All Where We Belong is released in the next few weeks.

  1. Wish I was there.

  2. I was there and it was awesome. I sincerely hope they are planning to release a live DVD or CD which includes these acoustic versions of Toadies classics.

  3. Toadies unplugged album would be monumental.
