It was a great year for records, so many artists putting out relevant, solid albums. It was a year so good that even being in the Big 8 didn’t mean you even made it into the top list, let alone your rightful birthright slot. So yep. Mastodon’s “Crack The Skye” was, in my opinion, the best record of the year. There was nothing wrong whatsoever on this album, not a wasted second, note or word. Beating out my 2 favorite bands, U2 and Slayer? Yeah. I kinda feel weird about it, especially since this is the first year both of them have released records, and neither could come in at #1. Other members of the Big 8 releasing records this year that did NOT make the list: Lyle Lovett, The Melvins, Bruce Springsteen.

But for the most part, there aren’t many surprises here. Wilco, Tortoise, Elvis Costello, and The Mars Volta are probably always making this list each year they put out a record. Neko Case was so strong this year, as was Norah Jones. Sonic Youth released another piece of awesome with “The Eternal”, as some newer blood made it in, with Alberta Cross, Bat For Lashes and Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble.

Live, this year we had the biggest concert spectacle ever on the road with U2’s 360 tour, another trek to Austin for ACL ’09 and the rain that plagued the weekend, missed Dia De Los Toadies 2, but saw them in twice (after tonight) in the newly reopened Trees. Caught a couple of fiery reunion shows from Slow Roosevelt, making you wish they were still around and showing everyone how it’s done while helping Brutal Juice and Shallow Reign made me nostalgic.

When it was all said and done, ’09 was a great year for music, and I hope the trend continues on in ’10!
