Preview: Cheap Trick – Billy Bob’s TX, Fort Worth, TX – 12/03/2010
The last time Cheap Trick graced the stage at Billy Bob’s, during the winter of 2003, they tore the place down in a fashion I wasn’t even ready for. I had seen them in the cozier atmosphere of Trees in Dallas a few years prior, but was not prepared for them on this night. Looking like they had stepped directly off the Heaven Tonight album cover, and opening with their all too familiar “Hello There” salutation, Rick Nielsen skipped circles like a demented schoolboy as he, vocalist Robin Zander, bassist Tom Petersson, and popular music’s foremost “anti-rock” drummer Bun E. Carlos proceeded to roar through their catalog with a youthful vengeance.
Try to deny their string of hits. “Surrender”. “Dream Police”. “I Want You To Want Me”. “Voices”. “Gonna Raise Hell”. “The Flame”. You just can’t. And that just scratches the surface of the 35 year plus career of Rockford, IL’s favorite export. Touting a solid output of albums in the past 7 or so years, look for a vigorous display of showmanship, hits (new and old), and possibly a Beatles cover or two from of America’s most steadfast quartets.
